1) What is the difference between purpose, vision, mission and values, and why they are needed?
- Purpose: My reason why. This has to do with my story of self and what pushes me to action.
- Vision: The ideal state. This is what I imagine to be the best scenario in an ideal world; it is the promise of possibility.
- Mission: My commitment to the vision. My mission is a tactical way of how I will pursue creating the ideal state I want to see.
- Values: Underlying principles rooted in purpose and vision. My values are my compass, they are rooted in my purpose and vision and guide me in the right direction when I am not sure what decision to make.
- The purpose, vision, mission and values are important reminders of why we are called to action. They help us stay focused in our work, as well as open to opportunity.
2) What is the difference between strategies and tactics?
- Strategies: Overarching frameworks to use as a guide on potential ways to reach a goal.
- Tactics: A specific plan on how to get from point A to point B.
3) What are your sources of inspiration and strength?
I am consistently inspired by individuals who are unapologetically committed to their purpose. I believe it is everyone’s purpose to serve in some capacity. When we serve something higher than ourselves, we feel good and inspired to continue to work. When I see people like Professor Olsen who are clear about their values, their vision for what they want to see in the world, and commit to those things, I am inspired to do the same. A source of strength for me has been the power to say “no”. It took me too long to realize that saying “no” to things that are not for me empowers me to have the time and energy to dedicate towards activities that fulfill my sense of purpose. I am inspired by people who act quietly and make a great impact, even if that impact is only preparing themselves for something greater.
My source of strength comes from the ever-present flow of love within me and everyone else. Every morning, I meditate to tap into this source of strength to remind myself that I am my best self when I am at peace. Setting aside the mental chatter in my mind helps me to see the situations in my life with clarity and have the focus and poise to deal with those situations to the best of my ability. I am further strengthened and inspired by the knowledge that I am where I am today because of the hard and loving work of my ancestors. Their love is what fueled them to overcome their challenges and it is what inspires me to overcome mine.
